[Nfb-krafters-korner] carrying canes!!

If I am not going dog guide, I always take my cane. Our sighted guides can
easily miss things that we should know are there. And, it is also a way to
see what is around me. My husband doesn't always tell me everything that
is around, so it is nice to nose around with the cane to see what I can
find.

Also, my f father was notorious for bumping me into things in stores when we
were shopping, so it was nice to have that second line of defense with him!

Often he would leave me with our shopping cart and go into a different
shopping isle to get something, so then I would start nosing around with the
cane to see what I could find on the shelves in the isle I was in.

You are so right, Lauren. Yes, I have had a family member tell me I don't
need my cane. My oldest daughter at times is still in denial about my sight
loss. If there are people around, she will say to me, at time, "You don't
need that you can see just fine." It is very painful to me when she says
things like this. I have a small amount of peripheral vision, so I guess
she thinks that is "seeing just fine."

I consider my cane a badge of honor, really. I always say, "I have earned
this, and I am using it." My husband agrees, and he always says, "Don't
forget your cane." It lets people know I cannot see and that I might need
some help. But, most of all, it keeps me from falling down a step or
tripping on something on the sidewalk that I did not know was there.

It is VERY important for those around us to be sure we do have our cane and
not to make us feel like a freak when we use it. It is our eyes.
