I had the same problem with my husband. He never really accepted my blindness. I hade to say I saw things, when we went for a ride, or he would get mad. He did not like me using my cane. Now he is almost out of my life, my cane is a part of me. All my friends accept it with no problem.
My adopted mother walked with crutches, so I did not use a cane as a kid. I just followed her. I was not introduced to a cane until I was a teanager. I had a hard time accepting the cane into my life. I felt it was a way of publisizing I was blind.
I found out I had a sight problem in a very strange way. When you are a partial and can get around, you do not know that others around you can see better than you.
I remember, as clear as day, my grand mother asking me if I saw the robbin outside. I asked her, what robbin? Then she explained to me that I did not have as good sight as others. I mainly remember the question about the robbin and where she was sitting. This was shortly befor I went to first grade.

Hi,
Interesting how some others don't want us to use our canes. When I first started using one I got comments like "you don't need it while I'm here to help you" and "your cane is in the way." I remember one time when we did a group picture and some didn't want my former husband's and my cane in the picture. I always have mine with me now whether people like it or not. It really isn't their place to tell us what to do or not do with our canes.
Thanks
Lauren
