Thanks to Laura, Eileen, and Dixie. I thought I was right but I hadn't done cables in a while. I never liked my cables. Turns out I had been doing them slightly wonky??? Anyway, here's what happened today.

My son asked me when I wanted to go to the "yarn" store. I told him anytime now--sooner rather than later--as I had asked him to take me, let me see, how many days ago? (I didn't say that to him, though)

So this morning, he said: "get dressed." We often snap little code words early in the morning. He's not an early morning person so I've learned that short and sweet is what I get. Anyway, I said: "yes sir" as when someone mentions ride I'm always ready!!

Well, he asked me which one I wanted to go to. I said: "A C Moore as it's on this side of town"; he's having car problems so I didn't want him driving way across the city (with Raleigh cops all around) to go the one I really wanted to go to.

So we rode and we rode and we rode. (he usually takes the long way anywhere! so I figured he was just sight-seeing.

Anyway, I really wasn't paying attention or I would have known where we were. I had my mind too much on something else. The car was really nice and cozy and warm!!!!! And I was happily ensconced in my little seat secure in the knowledge that my son had his license back and was driving quite well. Anyway, we got there and he said: "don't bother with your coat as we're right at the door." So I hopped out and before you could say presto! I was inside this really familiar place. He had taken me all the way to Great Yarns and I was totally speechless. The clerks laughed at me as I had to reconfigure what I was going to get based on where I was. And I did forget the cotton for a dolphin dish cloth that I needed to make but I can get that later. I got 10 balls of Encore Chunky in a cream color--more leaning toward yellow than white--and a longer pair of size 15 needles and a different cable needle. Needless to say, I was quite happy. He asked where else I wanted to go and I said: "Wendy's" so we went there and to Bojangles and then back home. Needless to say it was a fun surprise, and I had fun. I asked: "do you have time for them to wind it into balls?" And the lady said: "it's all good to go." So I came home, wound the balls as I need two strands for my project. It had called for three strands of Simply Soft but will need two of chunky. It took me no time to be happily knitting away on my hoodie thingy.

It's rare to have treats like that so I was quite happy.

But sorry; I got off track. When I was there I asked the ladies about my cables and told them I never had liked how they looked. I did an afghan with them once but just never thought mine looked as nice as somebody else's. Anyway, she gave me a j cable needle, which I've used before but had forgotten about. She said she puts her stitches on the short end and takes them off the long end and so they're never twisted. I had done that before but had forgotten all about it. So now I'm happier about doing cables--given all your messages and her advice about the needle.
Deb B.
