I use 12 inche circular needles to make socks and have no trouble with  
them.  So smaller socks I am thinking about.  The double pointed   needles can 
be a challenge when doing socks and if you drop a stitch off then  you 
really have a challenge with those small needles.  With the 12 inche  circular 
needles all the stitches are easier to stay on the one needle and I  wrap an 
elastic, rubber band on each end so stitches are staying put.
