[Nfb-krafters-korner] digested messages

The messages are coming to me digested and it takes forever to go through them. Does anyone know a faster way to do it? Should I try to just get them undigested? Help!

I went to my Bernina class today and you could sure spend a fortune on accessories. There are at least 57 different feet you can put on the machine. I have the low end one with 3 feet.

I also learned that if you get yourself signed up with Jo-Anne Fabrics E-mail list you will very often get coopons worth 40 percent.

You all have me comfused, now. I was away for a while, sick and am trying to catch up. When you did the hairpin lace project, did you actually use a beading loom, like you are talking about? It sounds like you have not done a loom class, yet, but that is what I thought that lace clase was all about and it started this topic.

  Susan:

That sounds interestingI've always used the loom for seed beading, but never thought of using it for larger beads. Off the top of my head, I'm thinking that you would have to space the warp far apart enough to accomodate the width of the beads. I wonder too, if you use raw hide for the worp threads, whether it's suppleness when stretched tight could effect the tension. You got me thinking about other types of worps to play with like hemp threads for example. Also, do your native american pattern books have word charts?
There are tons of native american designs with word charts at www.bead-patterns .com. There is enough stuff there to keep a loom beader going til rapture.

I also would like to know when you did your loom pieces, what you did with the worp threads once the piece was done. I thought if I did a basic bead looming class that I would teach how to use the worps at the bottom for adding fringe so that you'd only have to weave in the top worp threads. I think weaving those worp threads back into the piece will be the most challenging for beginners, and I guess that's why I hadn't done a loom piece in years. Larger beads with wider spaces between worps might be a good way for beginner blind students to get a feeling for it. It's easy to accidentally pick up 2 warp threads when they are so spaced so closely together. ----- Original Message -----

Joyce, that must be the coolest button holer! It must judge the size of the button and go from there. I look forward to learning some of your sewing tips.

Eileen I was so impressed by all you know about knitting and where to get yarn and everything. I just had to get through the holidays before joining the list. I decided to knit alpakka hats for my family for Christmas and made six hats between Thanksgiving week and New Years. I was pleased to have a stay at home project because I was dealing with a sick kitty and I spent many hours on the couch with a kitty on either side and my dog at my feet. I had to put Pogo down 3 days after Christmas but I was glad that I had spent all that time with him, and knitting kept me out of the "big box" stores.

Looking forward to learning from all of you.

    Hi folks,

Last Monday night we ran through how to download class recordings from send space. I have included a summary of how to do it and the recording of last night's chat to practice on.

How to Download Class Recordings from SendSpace.com

    1. Access the class link to Sendspace link sent to your email address.

    2. Press enter to open the link. Note, if the link doesn't open do the following:

    A. place the cursor at the beginning of the link,Select the link by pressing the shift and down arrow together

    B. Press control C to copy it to your clipboard

C: Open the start menu with the windows key Select the letter R for the run dialogue box

D: Press control V to paste the link into the edit box

    E: Press Enter.

    3. Once the Send space page has loaded, Press the down arrow key until you find the Regular Download button and press enter.

    4. Find the name of the file useing your links list command or use the down arrow to find the name of the file and press enter.

    5. A download box should appear asking if you want to run or save the download. Note, this box comes up in both Internet Explorer or Mozilla. The box should list what folder it will download into. Unless you specify a different folder, your download by default will be My Documents or Desktop.

    6. Once the download is complete, find the file on your computer in it's respective folder and press enter. Your player window should come up and the recording should begin to play. If you have more than 1 kind of player on your computer such as Windows Media Player or Winamp, you may get a screen asking which player you want to use. Select the one you want and press Enter.

You can move around in your respective players such as rewinding, fastforwarding, and pausing in media player by pressing the alt key to reveal the menu bar, use the right arrow to select the play menu then press the down arrow to open the play menu, or press alt P to open the play menu directly. The menu should display the various options and their various shortcut strokes. Note, if you use These key strokes you do not have to access the menu bar to do it. Control P toggles play and pause, Control s stops it, control shift f fast forwards itt and control shift B rewinds.

If you are using winamp, use the letter X to play, V to stop, hold down left arrow and rewind and the righht to fast foraward and the letter C or space bar to toggle pause and play. Please note, t you refer to your manual for instructions. These are the commands for users of windows XP. Since I have no experience with Windows 7 or Vista, I suggest you consult your manual.

    ?

Here is the link to Monday night's chat you can use to practice on.

    File Name: kk chat.mp3

    Size: 10MB |

    Download Link:

    http://www.sendspace.com/file/dpbyli

If the instructions are different using vista or windows 7, maybe someone can volunteer to write a short step by step like I did here .

I started knitting about a year ago and have joined a local knitting group here in Princeton. I go to the Pennsylvania Ski for Light program every year, which is coming up next week, and wanted to be able to sit around the fire and knit with the rest of the knitters. I have also done some sewing with a friend for many years. My mother just helped me to get a Bernina sewing machine which is so easy to use and even has an automatic kneedle threader. I did thread it myself but it took me 20 minutes. Hopefully I will get better. It will be fun to have a machine that does more than just straight stitching. I got $150 toward it by trading in my sisters old Singer feather weight. I just made a carrier for my dog's water bottle.

I am looking forward to hearing what other folks are doing and getting some tips for my knitting and sewing.

    Sue

It makes a pattern you can feel in the knitting. This was just to practice.
I am not making anything from it. You don't need to know how to knit in the
round to make something with a cable stitch in it.

You know there are ways of knitting tactile images like leaves, vines and
flowers using variations on cable stitch (plus other tricks). I had an aunt
(now long deceased) who showed me a sweater knit that way down the front. I
never saw the pattern but she said it was a nightmare to get all the
      stitches counted right.
But I found it very beautiful.
I used to knit and liked it when I was young, but don't care for it now
after seeing how machines can put out a sweater, even one with designs in
it, in just a few hours. It would take a person much longer. But of course
all my elderly female relatives are expert knitters.
      Anyway, happy stitching!

It makes a pattern you can feel in the knitting. This was just to practice.
I am not making anything from it. You don't need to know how to knit in the
round to make something with a cable stitch in it.

That would be a bit funny, but we want to look at the positive side of life. Successes are on my mind, not the thought of death.
Now I am on Weight Watchers, I do not even let that thought cross my mine.
Lets be positive. We will attract more to the group.

      Happy 2010!

    Welcome Sue,

I had gotten a Bernina about 10 years back soon after I went blind. Man,
you said you got $150 for your Feather Weight? Those babies are very hard
to find and the quilters love them because they are easy to take to
workshops and classes. I have a Feather Weight that I got second hand 50 years
    ago.

I got the Bernina with the needle threader, but it did not last very long
for me. I have found needle threaders that I feel are the best because
they are almost 2 inches long the wire part and the metal disk is a little
larger then a quarter in size. So I can feed it through the needle and
actually let go of it to find the thread without it falling down or out of the
needle and then use both hands to get the thread into it.

I love my sewing and quilting. I have not done any lately, but the urge
is starting to make me poke around and find a sewing project to work on.

I went out and purchased a Singer machine last year just to make
buttonholes with. I had this old Singer and started searching around for one like
it. It has this foot that you drop a button into the foot. Then you slide
the bar on the foot to hold the button in place. You set all the settings
on the machine to this certain spot and wa la it will make a buttonhole to
perfectly fit that button and stops when it is finished doing the
buttonhole. I paid only $115 for the machine and that included shipping.

Glad you joined us. We have a lot of talented folks around here.

We have some great upcoming classes.

I did a sewing machine lecture last year on tools that I have found to help
me cut out fabric, sew and quilt.

    Keep on Krafting...

    Joyce

    Hi Sue:

I think we talked about knitting shortly after the NJ state convention.
Glad to see you decided to join the list. Right now, I'm just finishing up
a sweater I had started before the holidays and got side-tracked by starting
a baby sweater for an in-laws baby. I'm also just finishing up my second
strip of hairpin lace and am anxiously waiting for the second class on
Friday night to find out how to piece the strips together.

Hope to hear more about your projects.

    Talk soon.

    Eileen

    Marc Maurer, President

    Convention Scholarships Available

    by Allen Harris

The Kenneth Jernigan Convention Scholarship Fund is looking for
individuals who can use some financial assistance to attend our national
convention in Dallas, Texas. In 2010 our convention will begin on
Saturday, July 3, and run through Thursday, July 8. This will be only
the second year that we have operated on this abbreviated schedule. The
convention is a day shorter than you might expect, ending with the
    banquet Thursday evening.

Who is eligible to receive a Kenneth Jernigan Convention Scholarship?
If you are a member of the National Federation of the Blind, you are
eligible to apply. Preference, however, will be given to first-time
convention attendees. The scholarship selection committee is able to
make an occasional exception, but first-time convention participants are
    the target group.

What do I have to do to apply for a Kenneth Jernigan Convention
    Scholarship?
You must do the following and are responsible for these application
    requirements:

    1. Find out who your state NFB president is and get him or her to write
a letter of recommendation for you, or you may have a chapter president
or other officer write a letter of recommendation, but we must have a
letter from a Federation leader who is familiar with you.

    2. You must write a letter to the Kenneth Jernigan Fund committee
expressing the reasons why you want a scholarship. Describe your
participation in the Federation and what you think you would get and
give to the convention. Please send all information to Allen Harris,
5209 Sterling Glen Drive, Pinson, Alabama 35126, or email the
    information to <allen.harris at dwx.com> or <joy.harris at dwx.com>.

    3. You must register for and attend the entire convention, including the
    banquet.

What else must I do to insure that my application will be considered?
We must receive all of the following:
    1. Your full name
    2. Your address
    3. Your telephone numbers (home, business, cell)
    4. Your email address (If you have one)
    5. Your state president's name and the name of your local chapter, if
    you attend one
All applications must be received by April 14, 2010.

How do I get my scholarship funds?
You will get a debit card at the convention loaded with the amount of
your scholarship award. The times and locations to pick up your debit
card will be listed in the notice you receive if you are a scholarship
winner. The committee is not able to provide funds before the
convention, so work with your chapter and state affiliate to assist by
advancing funds you can pay back when you receive your scholarship.

When will I know if I have been selected as a Kenneth Jernigan
    Scholarship winner?
The committee makes every effort to notify scholarship winners by May
15, but you must do several things to be prepared to attend if you are
    chosen:

    1. You must make your own hotel reservation. If something prevents you
from attending, you can cancel your reservation.

    2. You will receive a letter with the convention details which should
answer many of your questions. It is also helpful to find a mentor from
your chapter or affiliate to act as a friend and advisor during the
convention. Although you will not know officially whether or not you
have been selected until mid-May, you must make plans to attend and then
    adjust your plans accordingly.

This past summer in Detroit the Jernigan Fund scholarship committee
awarded seventy Kenneth Jernigan Scholarships. The average grant was
$600. You can include in your letter to the committee any extenuating
circumstances which the committee may choose to take into consideration.
Above all, please use this opportunity to attend your first convention
and join several thousand other blind Federationists in the most
important meeting of the blind in the world.

If you have questions or need additional information, call Allen Harris
at (205) 520-9979 or email him at <allen.harris at dwx.com>. You may also
email Joy Harris at <joy.harris at dwx.com>. We look forward to seeing you
    in Dallas.

  Hi folks,

Last Monday night we ran through how to download class recordings from
send space. I have included a summary of how to do it and the recording
  of
last night's chat to practice on.

How to Download Class Recordings from SendSpace.com

  1. Access the class link to Sendspace link sent to your email address.

  2. Press enter to open the link. Note, if the link doesn't open do the
  following:

  A. place the cursor at the beginning of the link,Select the link by
pressing the shift and down arrow together

  B. Press control C to copy it to your clipboard

C: Open the start menu with the windows key Select the letter R for the
  run dialogue box

D: Press control V to paste the link into the edit box

  E: Press Enter.

  3. Once the Send space page has loaded, Press the down arrow key until
  you
find the Regular Download button and press enter.

  4. Find the name of the file useing your links list command or use the
down arrow to find the name of the file and press enter.

  5. A download box should appear asking if you want to run or save the
download. Note, this box comes up in both Internet Explorer or Mozilla.
The box should list what folder it will download into. Unless you
  specify
a different folder, your download by default will be My Documents or
  Desktop.

  6. Once the download is complete, find the file on your computer in it's
respective folder and press enter. Your player window should come up and
the recording should begin to play. If you have more than 1 kind of
  player
on your computer such as Windows Media Player or Winamp, you may get a
screen asking which player you want to use. Select the one you want and
  press Enter.

You can move around in your respective players such as rewinding,
fastforwarding, and pausing in media player by pressing the alt key to
reveal the menu bar, use the right arrow to select the play menu then
press the down arrow to open the play menu, or press alt P to open the
play menu directly. The menu should display the various options and
  their
various shortcut strokes. Note, if you use These key strokes you do not
have to access the menu bar to do it. Control P toggles play and pause,
Control s stops it, control shift f fast forwards itt and control shift
  B
  rewinds.

If you are using winamp, use the letter X to play, V to stop, hold down
left arrow and rewind and the righht to fast foraward and the letter C
  or
space bar to toggle pause and play. Please note, t you refer to your
manual for instructions. These are the commands for users of windows XP.
Since I have no experience with Windows 7 or Vista, I suggest you
  consult
  your manual.

Here is the link to Monday night's chat you can use to practice on.

  File Name: kk chat.mp3

  Size: 10MB |

  Download Link:

  http://www.sendspace.com/file/dpbyli

If the instructions are different using vista or windows 7, maybe
  someone
can volunteer to write a short step by step like I did here.

I have worked a lot on the circle knitting looms like the Knifty Knitter. Does anyone use this product?

I am making three cell phone carriers. I noticed for me anyway, if I am on
different parts of several projects I stay really motivated and love what I
  do even more.
My brain is also busy with two other projects in the planning stages.

Cindy asked if anyone uses the Nifty Knitter. I do, but get so board going
around and around where progress seems so slow. I was nursing a sick dog
and had to stay near him. For this time the Nifty Knitter was just fine to
work on. As soon as the dog went to the vet, I have not picked it up since
and that was a month ago.

I saw a neat afghan that was made on the Nifty Knitter. I think she said
she sowed together the tubes then edged the piece. She used different sized
looms and made each tube a different color that blended. She had a
variegated mint green, light blue, yellow, creamy white and some other
colors. Each of the tubes were the color in the variegated yarn. The yarn
  was muted. Very pretty piece.

  Warm hugs,
  Becky and dog guide Jake

  Hi Diane & All:

Well, I guess I have a few things going on right now.

Last night I just finished my second strip of hairpin lace and am looking
forward to tonight's class on how to put these pieces together. So far so
good with this craft, but we'll see if I can manage the piecing together.

The second thing I'm just finishing up is the knitted OWLS pullover which
was a free download from RAVELRY.COM last year. I still need to work the
ribbing around the neck and then wash and block it out. I'm trying to find
new things to work on once I get these done. Maybe I'll be doing a hairpin
lace project or a crochet project next.

  Eileen

I do, I have 3 or 4 different sizes. I also have 5 rectangular looms as
well. I am very interested in the triangle looms too.

  Have mercy, four different items

  1. A second cro hooked red and white scarf with knitted hat set.
  2. A pink baby cardigan, which only needs the buttons.
  3. A stocking cap of lavender out of sport weight, which is taking me
  forever.
  4. A crochetted lap throw of a blended wool, three different shades of
heather, one mostly gray, another mostly tan, and the last mostly mauveish.
Very muted colors, pattern is a modified shell from Lion Bran, and I'm doing
stripes of different sizes. I am praying I will have enough for the lap
throw, but I should be okay.

I am not going to mention the few 2 or 3 or so that are unfinished and have
been set aside. They may get pulled out and either reworked from the
beginning or if necessary, pulled out and worked as something totally
  different. Who knows!
