Terry,

It is possible that your yarn is in what is called a Hank, not a shank.  If 
it is a hank you will need to be very careful when unwinding it or it can 
turn into a knotted mess.  In a hank the yarn is first wound into large 
loops or circles, then it gets tied together in anywhere from 2 to 3 or 4 
spots with smaller pieces of yarn.  After its tied together the manufacturer 
twists the yarn and it almost feels like a large fancy yarn knot or twist. 
Do you remember the brand of yarn you bought?

Before you can start winding a hank into a skein, you must first gently 
untwist the fancy knot and lay it out flat.  When its laid out flat, you 
will see what I mean by the large loops.  Next, gently run your fingers 
around the circles of yarn and feel for the smaller pieces of yarn that are 
holding the loops together.  You will need to snip with a scissor the little 
pieces of yarn that hold the larger loops together.  Make sure you get all 
the little holding loops cut off before you attempt to unwind the hank and 
wind it into a pull skein.  I find it best to lay a hank on a large clear 
table top where I have room to work.

Next you will need to find the tail end.  Most people who buy hanks use a 
ball winder & a yarn swift to do this.  I have these things, but don't like 
the swift so just use the ball winder.

Once I get the Hank untwisted, I usually put it either over my shoulder to 
keep the large circle open and prevent it from getting tangled.  I then 
start to wind the yarn into a ball.  It takes time, but it can be done. 
Just be very gentle handling the hank.  And with any luck it may not be a 
hank but just another way of winding the yarn into a ball that you're not 
accustomed to.


I know this may sound very confusing and is difficult to describe, so maybe 
if it turns out that you absolutely have a hank someone else can take a shot 
at describing how to get it set up for winding into a ball.

If you had known you might have been ordering a hank, you could have asked 
Web's if they offer the service of winding hanks into pull skeins for their 
customers.  Many times yarn shops will offer this as a service and it is 
worth it even if you have to pay a little extra.
