(http://www.kingskountry.com/index.php?dispatch=categories.view&category_id=199) for 6mm cord or 2 size J crochet hooks for
3-4mm cord.
Vertical Instructions:
The vertical pattern is worked with one length of cord. Horizontal cording
is done with two pieces (one for the seat and one for the chair back).
Vertical rows should be firm, but not so tight that you bend the center bar.
The easiest way to work on the chair is to sit with the frame in front of
you with the chair back to your left. You can also place the frame on a
coffee table or box, if you prefer standing.
The rounded corners are left unworked. You will be working from the top
left corner of the chair back down to the front left corner and then back up.

Step 1.

Start the chair by facing it from the left side. The roll of macrame cord
should be on the floor behind the chair frame. If using a hank, find the
cord end in the center of it, as this will keep your cord from tangling.
Bring the end of the cord over the back of the chair frame, under the center
bar and tie a very tight knot around the straight front left corner (front
corner closest to you). Leave a 4”-6” tail. (See Picture 1.) The picture
is opposite of where you should be standing. This was done to give you a
good view for placement of cord. Tape the end to the chair frame so that as
you weave it will be covered. Remove the tape before you get to it.

Step 2.

At the top of the chair back take the loose cord and pull a loop forward
under the bar and put the crochet hook in it. The cord should be placed
across the center or flat part of the crochet hook. This lives a big enough
loop to pull the crochet hook through on the next chain stitch. (Picture 2)
The cord should be pulled tight and the crochet hook should rest across the
corner of the chair.

Step 3.

Bring a loop from the back of chair to the front, under the crochet hook,
under the center bar and then over the bottom bar. Bring the loop up at
the front left corner of the chair in front of the knot you tied on. (Picture
3) Place second crochet hook in the loop and allow to rest across corner
of chair. Pull on the loose cord at back of chair and this will hold the
crochet hook in place.

Step 4.

Bring the loose cord forward (under the top bar) and using the crochet
hook, make a chain stitch by pulling the cord through the loop that is already
around the crochet hook. Keep tension on the loose cord. You will be
making a chain stitch over the three cords that are already on the chair.

Step 5.

Bring a loop from back to front over the top back bar of the chair frame,
(under the crochet hook) under the center bar and over the bottom bar,
bringing the loop up between the three cords already on the frame and the two
cords you just brought down from the back. (Picture 5) Using the crochet
hook, make a chain stitch by pulling this loop through the previous loop.
Make sure you have the tension on the cord closest to you so that the cords
are firm on the chair. Pull on the loose cord at the top back bar of the
frame. This will put tension on the bottom crochet hook again. Make another
chain stitch at the top of the chair. Repeat this procedure from the top of
chair frame to the bottom until you have completed the full number of cords
required in your pattern. Remember you will only be doing a chain stitch
over two cords now. The first time was three because you pulled a single
cord down and tied it on the chair bottom.

Step 6.

After completing the last row, cut the cord, leaving a 4”- 6” tail. Pull
the bottom crochet hook out and then release the last chain stitch you
just made. Pull the entire piece of cord through the chain stitch at the top
of the chair with the other crochet hook (this will finish off that edge and
get rid of that crochet hook) and then bring the cord back down the chair
and re-hook the first chain stitch you took out. You will have to either
chain stitch over the last three cords, or chain over two and then one cord.

Step 7.

Turn the chair over and weave the end of the cord underneath the frame.
Horizontal Instructions:
Horizontal cords are woven from left side to right side. Work on the
straight bars of the chair. The rounded corners are left unworked. Sit with the
chair front facing away from you, but tilted so that you are working from
the top of the chair back down towards the seat. I put the back rear legs of
the chair up on a box or table, so that the chair is almost, but not
quite, upside down. This way I am not bending over the chair and thereby not
putting unnecessary strain on my back.

Step 8.

Place the roll of cord on the floor to the left of you. Tie a knot on the
top left corner of the chair back on the straight side bar. (See Picture).
Pulling a loop across the chair. Weave your first row of the chair back
design, going under and over. When you reach the right side, bring the
loop around the outside of the chair and up inside the bar so that the loop
is between the cords you just pulled across and the top bar of chair. Slide
the first crochet hook in the loop and pull tight on the loose cord on the
left side. This will hold the crochet hook tight. Taking that loose cord
and bringing it up inside the chair frame on the left, between the two
cords just pulled across and the top bar of the chair frame, slide the second
crochet hook under it and bring the cord back around the outside of the
chair. This will form your left side starting chain stitch.

Step 9.

Continue working down the chair and weaving over and under, following
your chair pattern. At each side bring the loop up between the two cords
already on the chair and the two cords you just brought across and chain stitch.

Step 10.

When you finish the pattern, end it like you did the vertical cords and
weave the tail in under the cords in back.
Seat Instructions:
Horizontal Cords are woven from left side to right side. Sit with the
front of the chair facing you. I like to work with the back legs of the chair
propped up on a box or coffee table, so I do not have to bend over the chair
while working on it. Once again, work on the straight bars of the chair.
The rounded corners are left unworked.

Step 11.

Place the roll of cord on the floor to the left of you. Tie a knot on the
front left side bar of the chair, (See Picture) leaving a 4”- 6” tail.
Pulling a loop across the chair, weave in your first row of the chair seat
pattern. Bring the loop over the right side bar and bring it up between the
two cords you just put on the chair and the right inside front bar of chair
seat. Lay your crochet hook in the loop and pull tight on the loose cord
on left side of chair. Bring the loose cord up inside the chair frame
between the two cords you just put on and the left inside front bar of the chair
frame and lay the second crochet hook under it. Bring the cord back down
and around the outside of chair frame. This creates your first chain stitch
on the left side of the chair. Continue weaving the chair seat pattern the
way you did the chair back. When you get to the chair arms, you will have
to pick up your roll of cord and move it so that you will not have a cord
wrapped around the outside of the chair frame. Finish off the chair seat in
the same manner as the chair back.
Congratulations you have completed your first macrame lawn chair!
