Terry:

If you've twisted the hat, the only way to uhnwork a twist when knitting in
the round is to catch it very early on and get rid of it on the first or
second rows of knitting.

When working in the round, before you join the two ends to form a closed
circle, you must first make sure by feeling, that all the stitches are
laying out flat, hanging down in the same direction. If you feel that they
are spiraling around the cable, or needle portion of the needle, use your
fingers to straighten them out. Then just be extremely careful as you bring
the needle points together to begin your circular knitting project.

Even after you join and complete the first round feel the stitches again and
make sure they did not twist on you, so actually you can still straighten
them out on the second round by untwisting them with your hands. After you
work several rows and know they are all straight and there is no twist in
your work you will not have to worry about it from that point on.
