[Nfb-krafters-korner] Braille was RE: needles

Well, my braille instructor taught one woman that began at the age of 90 so
I guess, you could wait until then to pursue it. <smile>

I am still working on classes through Hadley even though I went through the
whole code at a rehab facility. My speed is not where I want it and most of
my reading is done through audio but there are times when I just need to
"see" something and the only way I can do that is through braille. You don't
have to take on everything at once and if you need to wait a while before
tackling braille, then do that. My only comment is that you shouldn't think
of it as a now or never option. Honestly, since you have learned the
alphabet and hopefully numbers, You could work on a few words and then you
could read patterns.

Once you look at a whole pattern and know that every row starts with the
word "row" followed by a number and then a colon, you will easily memorize
these words and know without a doubt where each line starts. Then you
already know the sign for K and P. Depending on how they are brailled, they
may have the sign to indicate they are a letter and then they are followed
by a number and a comma. Other things you would need to know are
parentheses, these may seem hard at first but you have already been a print
pattern reader and know what patterns typically look like. Some other words
might be: repeat, K to end.

Those of us that use patterns, braille or on the computer, tend to write out
all of the lines. So, when a pattern says "Knit all even rows" we would fill
in all the even rows with knit. Anything that calls for a repeat of lines,
we would copy those lines into the correct row. This makes it easier to keep
track of where you are.

If you do decide to try learning enough braille to read patterns, one thing
you could do is to get a print copy and braille copy of the same pattern.
Then have your husband or friend help you read through it each day until you
have it down.

Yes, I am very pro braille but I am not really trying to shove it down your
throat here, promise. My only goal is to offer you all the tools you can use
to succeed. As other blind crafters on this list, we are all so proud of you
for trying things again. That is the one goal of this whole division. Just
because you are blind, you don't have to give up the things you did as a
sighted person.
