[Nfb-krafters-korner] Braille was RE: needles

I am finding my dimo tape is coming off my beading boxes. Any idea why. The only reason I can come up with is maybe the tape was old and maybe I need to trash all I have and get some new at convention and start my labeling all over again.
What do you all use for storing your beads? How do you label them?
I have plastic containers of all sizes and put the color and size of the bead. I am not into exotic beads, yet.
I usually leave them on the string or card until I am ready to use them or label them.
I need to get organized before I take up this craft, again. I was looking for my wrapping wire to bring to convention, but can not find it for the life of me.

Sahar; Do you have any wire you can bring. I will not have time to get any more before convention. I want to try out the tools at convention.

People always ask me why they should learn the slate and stylus. So many young people at the Center come to us not knowing how to write. It breaks my heart. I don't understand the logic of teaching children to write with a pen but not teaching blind children to write with the slate and stylus. They're not the same, no, as some are so fond of arguing, but they're both hand-writing. I can't imagine my world without Braille. I am very disorganized, and if I didn't have Braille to help me keep the mess sorted out, I'm not sure what I'd do. My bead warehouse downstairs would be more of an amazing mess without Braille. Sometimes Braille is hard for people to learn, but it would be the same if someone had to learn print as an adult. It is no different. I just know that I don't want to hire a reader or ask my husband about what's what every time I need to design a piece of jewelry. I'm not saying I never ask; I'm saying that I make every effort to have things labeled so I don't need to ask as often. Oh, and I realized just this last year that I really needed to do way more labeling. *lol* I thought I'd remember everything, so I'd just put the label carnelian with my carnelian beads. Never mind that there are bazillions of different carnelian beads that I have, and each from a different place, with a different price. Oh, to be 30 again and have the good memory I once had. *laughing*

Warm regards,
Sahar Husseini

I've been a Braille mentor for years. The oldest person I ever taught was 78 when she started and she really did learn everything. I worked with a friend who was in this thirties but he never really got very good. He didn't work on it at home and you can't learn it sitting in my kitchen for an hour once a week. He is also loosing his hearing, and if he looses it completely, no technology is going to do it. Finally we decided he should just consintrate on learning the alphabet so that he can at least label things and write notes to himself, but he doesn't really use it. I helped him label his CDs and I guess he does read those. I think it is just very individual. I would think that learning just enough to write things down would be helpful. I have been a Braillle reader all my life, and I'm not a speed-queen, but I wouldn't trade it for anything.

I think it is very sad that young people don't think it is necessary because of their dependence on technology. Sue

You have hit it on the head - I see it as being soooooo slow, and that I
would take forever and never be very good at it. I do not enjoy it at all
and at this point in my life I feel like there is no reason I need to do it.
I think to be proficient, meaning that I could stand and give a lecture
using braille, would take many years to achieve. I can't imagine someone my
age really becoming proficient at it. I can "read" books and knit at the
same time now, and I like that a lot. I think that if I want to learn
something, it would be to concentrate on a foreign language that I really
want to learn, just for my own satisfaction. Lynda
