[Nfb-krafters-korner] FRIDAYS QUESTION-What craft have you always wanted to try?

There are lots of places these days that demonstrate &/or teach spinning
techniques. If you live in an area where they have some of the wool/fiber
festivals often there are spinners that give demonstrations/classes and sell
the roving. Yarn shops sometimes have kits for beginner spinners that sell
the roving that has been washed, combed, carted and dyed in any range of
colors and is ready to spin. If you live on or near a farm you can go and
pick the animal you want your wool rovings clipped from. Of course this
stuff has the animal dirt in it and needs to be wash combed, carted and if
you like dyed ... too much work for my taste.

Like knitting, there are also weaving/spinning guilds around so don't be
afraid to use the phone and call some places in your local area to find out
if anything is being offered.

Spinning isn't terribly difficult -- a blind person can do it. The trick is
to get your rhythm and get your spun fiber nice and even -- if that's what
you're shooting for. You don't have to spend a lot on a spinning wheel,
spinning can be done with a dropped spindal or a Navaho Spindal. In fact a
few years back my husband made both dropped spindals for me & my knitting
guild & he also made a Navaho spindal for me to which turned out really
nice. I liked what I learned about spinning, but honestly, I'm not big time
into it because I prefer to sit down and get right to the knitting! <SMILE>

I have a friend who is a weaver/spinner and every thing she makes is hand
made from beginning to end. Because she insists on spinning her own yarns,
she must do all the prep work including the preparation of the wool & dying
it, anything she makes takes upwwards of 1 year from beginning to end before
it's complete.
