That's great!  He was using his cane for the things he felt like he could. 
That is always progress.  Eventually he will be comfortable using it and 
probably won't even need sighted guide anymore.  But it does take time.  It 
sounds like you are doing a wonderful job with your nephew.  Keep up the 
good work.
