Dick,
Good job.
Encourage him to take his cane with him when you go out all the time. It
is good that you sighted guide him.[he holds your arm], but be sure if he is
right handed he has the cane in his right hand and you are on his left.
Let him sweep back and forth while you walk. He needs to sweep wide enough
for him to walk. Tell him when he does not need the cane[swinging on the
swing], he needs to put it in a place he will be able to find it. Don't
just let him pass it over to you. That makes you responsible for it. It is
all about teaching him independence. These little things will get to be no
thought at all.
Be his eyes when you walk with him. If he is sweeping the cane and is on
a side walk when he touches the end of the side walk tell him that is the
grass edge or curb. You paint the picture in his mind so he has an
understanding of what things are. That should also make him curious and explore
things more.
