Make sure all your stitches are facing the center with no twisting, before starting your second time around the circle.  You knit into the first stitch, you casted on, to make a circle.  Expanding and contracting are used to shape, along with ribbing, to make an item like a hat.

I'm not sure I would know how to knit with circular needles.  Is there any tricks you have to watch out for?

You can also purchase straight needles in different lengths.  I  believe the standard length is around 14 inches, but you can get them shorter  [down to 10 or 9 inches] or longer up to 16 or 18 inches.
