Cindy,
You can use circular needles to knit a flat surface working back and forth or you can use them to knit in a circle [no seams needed]. Terry gave you the directions on things to be sure to do when knitting in a circle for hats, mittens, body of sweaters and sleeves[no seams to sew ]. You can use them to knit like your straight needles especially useful when knitting something that has a lot of stitches on it. I am 3/4 done with a blanket I am knitting for my queen size bed. I am using 50 inche circular knitting needles. I started off with 3 stitches and every row I added on one stitch.
Well at my max I had on my needles a little more than 550 stitches and now I am on the decreasing stage of it. Using circular needles you can distribute the weight of such a project and also you have a choice of lengths in circular needles. I stitch from one side to the other and then work back the other way. So think about regular needles, you work the stitches off one needle to the other needle. When you are working with circular needles the stitches are staying on the cable that attaches both needles.
You need to take my circuloar needle hat class. I will work that class into the schedule as it is a good class for the winter.
