I did my blanket in a green  and used a light and a medium lavender.  As I 
did the diagonal striping I  switched back and forth between a garter stitch 
[knit every row] color stripe  and a stockenette [knit 1 row and purl 1 row 
color stripe.  So it was just  a pattern made up and I just changed the 
color and the pattern stitch as I went  along.  I have not worked on it during 
the summer, but the fall is  coming.  I put it on the bed and snuggle under 
it while I knit.  I  have fallen asleep and in the middle of the night 
wondered what was sticking me  as I pulled the blanket up around my neck better.  
I can report in that I  haven't dropped a stitch yet as I ccan pull up 
these circular needles and get  the points far away from the stitches sittting 
on the needles.
 
Another tip for Cindy:
 
It is easier for me to use circular needles because I don't have to feel  
around to find the knitting needle that dropped some place.  They are  always 
attached!
