[Nfb-krafters-korner] Driving - WAS: RE: blind child with residual vision in asewing class

25 years ago just before we got married, we were traveling from upstate NY
to Long Island to visit my now in-laws. My now husband's new car broke down
in the Bronx in the middle of the evening rush hour, with the trains going
overhead. We had to get the car out of the road, so I sat behind the wheel
while my husband stood outside the driver's door and yelled directions to
me. We soon learned that from that position he could not push the car up
the incline into the near by gas station. When he announced to me that he
would have to push from the back of the car I was screaming at him and
refusing to take my foot off of the brake. I was afraid that I would not be
able to hear his directions from back there and I would end up hitting
something. A person stopped and helped my husband push so that he could
stand closer to the drivers side and yell directions to me. It was a good
thing that I'd had been behind the wheel of cars and semi tractor trailers
to steer the broken down trucks and cars that my father had to push into his
garage business. Hmm, there might even be some other driving experiences
that helped me out that I probably should not go into here.

Thanks for the walk down memory lane.

Annette

Linda;
Take it to a empty parking lot and you could have fun with verbal guidance.
I once drove a car off the road with a broken drive shaft with my husband
pushing. You might say I steared it. I even have driven boats with verbal
guidance. And of course I have driven bumper cars. I won third place and
second place, twice, in the national braille car rally. They use race cars
and the blind person reads directions to the race car driver and you are
timed! If there were better wramps and they were brightly marked in yellow,
I might take on the chalange of using a scooter to get to the store. It is
just to dangerous. I can not imagine a blind person driving a car, like in
the blind car chalange!

Joyce, you are such an inspiration. I love hearing you describe the things
you do and how you do them. You make me know I can do anything I decide to
do - of course I won't break the law and drive my motorcycle any longer
though..haha Lynda
