Terry, there is a tool, I think it is called a knitting spool, 
that works like a nifty nitter.  They can be as small as a spool 
from thread or almost as large as a pop can.  They have between 3 
and 6 pegs on the top with a hole going down the center.  You 
wrap the yarn around the pegs the same way you do with the nifty 
knitter but since it has so few pegs it makes a knitted cord.  
The larger ones can be made into rugs.
