[Nfb-krafters-korner] Washing and blocking yarn items

Yes, there are times when pressing is important in the construction process.
But, it is done with steam and lightly damp towesl and the iron is not
pressed down - it is done very gently. I have two hand bags that I will be
pressing later today - the parts are knitted, washed and blocked, but the
bags are done with stockinette stitch so they need to be lightly steam
pressed because there is no other way to get stockinette to lay flat -
Pressing can also be used in the blocking process with really nice results.
You want to have a fluid fabric that flows when the garment is worn on the
body - knits that are not blocked do not flow very well. I learned this from
a professor at the SFO Art Institute who designs and makes hand knits and
teaches clothing construction - I took a workshop with her a couple of years
ago in Vermont. She is a designer of knitted garments and her patterns are
sold to knitters. Learning from her made all the difference in my knitting
work - gave it a professional look and the garments look so much nicer.
