[Nfb-krafters-korner] gauge question

Hi ladies,

I thought I would jump in here and offer my two-cents on the subject of
swatching. I generally knit 20 stitches more than the number of stitches
they say I should have for a 4 inch swatch. I start with about 3-4 rows of
garder stitch. Then I do a border on either side of 4-5 stitches and
stockinette in the center. After a few rows of stockinette, I knit in 10
stitches, place a marker, then knit the recommended number of stitches and
place another marker. I then knit the rows (if given) for a 4 by 4 swatch
and place another marker at the 10 stitch mark. Then I knit another few
rows and then finish off with a few more rows of garder stitch and bind
off. I then have a nice size swatch that lays flat and I cand take my
measurements between the markers and see if I am on target for the
recommended gauge. It is a little work, but especially helpful if you use a
lot of the same type/brand of yarn and needle size. You can also launder it
and see how it responds.

HTH

I'm green with envy, Lynda! I love to travel - I have a gypsy heart and
travel is a passion of mine. I have not made it to Pr yet, but hope to
soon! Sounds like you had a great time, especially with your daughter's
family being able to go with you!
Blessings,
Ninn

This is how I do it, too.
