Joyce,
I'm the one based on another e-mail I received who suggested that we make
knitted or crocheted squares and sew them together at Convention and raffle
off the afghans or baby blankets they create. I believe this would take
some planning though as the knitters and the crocheters would have to get
together or if they do both, get together with both groups and decide the
colors, types of yarn, the size of needles or hooks, and the size of the
squares so it all comes to gether and looks nice.
I like the idea of pins or better, frig magnets. I read some e-mails
recently from Terry about coasters and I believe she could help us make some
nice frig magnets for sale. Frankly, I'm not sure what all of the fuss is
with fund raising. I mean if we had a lot of things to buy like other
divisions, I could see the intense need to fund raise. If it's simply to
get our name out or to donate to the NFB, then I don't see the problem.
Maybe I'm confused. I don't know if we should sell things unless we think
it's a good idea and it will sell.
I think we discussed doing something with kids at the business meeting. I
think it would be nice to collaborate with the National Association of
Parents of Blind Children as a project for the Youth Track, kids 11-18 years
old. We discussed making beaded bracelets but I also think the origami
animals or purses I've been reading about on this list would be cool, too.
It would give them something to take with them and show their parents that
even though they're blind, they can do crafts. the bracelets could be
something they wear at Convention. this could be fun and a way to get the
Krafters Division known. I've met some people that didn't know there was a
"Division. I met someone recently who asked me what kind of crafts blind
people do who are in the Division and I told whoever it was about some of
the different crafts. I just thought of something. Maybe do a project with
the kids and then if they want to make another thing, like a bracelet for
example, they could pay a little fee for all of the materials. This way,
they get the craft for fun and then if they really like doing it, they can
buy the materials for another one. I'd make the fee a small one so that the
parents or the kids could afford it. This would be a form of fund raising
that wouldn't be difficult.
One question. Can I still send in my $10.00 or do I have to wait until next
July? Please let me know. I intended to pay it at Convention but I didn't
have the funds with me at the time. I'd like to become a member but if I
do, I'd like to hear more about crafting on this list. I'm okay with
discussing other things which are of interest to blind people but I think
that sometimes we get bogged down in topics like membership and voting and
other stuff. I'm sure some may disagree but I'm sure many will agree that
if this list is for crafters and for doing crafts and for interesting things
for blind crafters, then we should concentrate on that.
Well, that's just my opinion. I hope my comments haven't offended anyone.
Regards,
Denise

I do recall a bit of that conversation. I don't know who had made the
comment, but it was not me. I think someone had mentioned about groups
making blocks and then putting them together and donating them to some
cause. I
also remember someone saying we could do something like that and possibley
raffle it off at Convention.
I did not have any comment, but I am glad folks share there ideas with all
of us here.
The last time fund raising was brought up to mewas a suggestion of having
tote bags made up with Krafters Korner on them to sell at NFB Convention in
Florida. The price was too high in my opinion and since this year was a
bit questionable about folks being at convention and volunteering to help
organize plans nothing was followed thru.
The last Fund raiser we have was 2 years back and we had ceramic pins
designed especially for the Krafters Division and we sold them in the
exhibit
hall and the Members meeting in Detroit, these pins were paid for by the
division. The year before that I had different ceramic pins made for the
division and I paid for them. They were sold at Convention in Dallas and
in
the exhibit hall and that was our first year. I did not take any money
out
of the treasurery The money was put into our treasurery. We also had
some folks that donated some knitted or crocheted small bags and we used
them
as door prizes at the member meeting. Last year we had pins left over from
the 2 years prior and we sold those pins.
I encourage fund raising ideas for the NFB Krafters Division.
I have paid out of my own pocket for advertising the NFB Krafters
Division.
The only money that we have collected besides the membership annual dues is
the rental fee of a table at the NFB Krafters Division at the last 3
Conventions [Detroit, Dallas and Florida]
Please keep in mind that the NFB Krafters Division began 3 years ago and
this was the 4th Convention that we participated in. Yes, I had started
the list serve 10 months prior to our first division meeting in Dallas and
that is when we created a constitution for the division and voted in
officers. We had less then 30 people at that first meeting and not
everyone
joined the division at that time.
Some divisions have only one meeting a year. At their annual meeting at
NFB Convention and they pay for guest speakers or have awards and
recognition
to their outstanding active members of the division. We have to have a
lot more in our treasurery before we can afford to do anything like that.
So please do keep your ideas coming and it has been suggested that the NFB
Krafters Division have a few more open members meeting which I will plan.
