A bobby pin can work for marking a stitch.

You can take one of the coiless plastic safety pins and slip it into the
chain you will be putting your last sttitch in that row.  You will
eventually do it enough that you won't need a marker.  I still like to use a
marker when I am using fuzzy yarn or fine yarn.
