Hi Yvonne,

Terry P. is our resident plastic canvis coaster person. I do some plastic
canvis items and i do know you can use other materials, not just yarn. I
have made crosses for the Christmas tree using a gold or silver matalic
twine just using the simple half cross stitch. I think that is the proper
name for the stitch that goes from left to right upward at an angle. You
can also make a stitch that makes an x like this.

If you look at your canvis as your horizontal rows (left to right) as 1, 2,
3 etc. going down and your virtical rows (up and down) as A, B, C etc. going
across, the Xstitch looks like this.

Pull needle up through row 2-A and then down through row 1-B.
Pull needle back up through row 2-B and then back downthrough row 1-A.

To make the next X stitch:

Pull needle up through row 2-B then down row 1-C.
Pull needle back upthrough row 2-c and then back down row 1-B.

Does that make since ?

You can also make this line ofstitches more pronounced for boarders or in
doing letters, by taking a piece of same color yarn or twine and laying it
down as though it was a part of the horizontal linebetween rows1 and 2.
Then as you are making your X stitches, cross back and forth over that extra
yarn/twine as though you are tacking it down onto your canvis. It can
really make a nice tactle line once you get the hang of it.

Since you asked about wire, you could probably use two different gauges of
wire and have the sameaffect.
