[Nfb-krafters-korner] Pottery Making

Does the tissue paper end up leaving impressions on the clay after it is
removed from the clay? I'm assuming that a little water on your fingertips
smooth's them out, unless you are applying some other texture, is that
right? Do you ever end up with pieces of tissue paper left in cracks of the
clay? Does it just burn off in the kiln? I've used tape on the surface of
an item to prevent me from getting colored glaze where I did not want it.
The tape burned off in the kiln.

What if you had a cavity in the middle of a clay item filled with paper or
cardboard to help give the drying clay support? When you put the clay in
the kiln, would the paper or cardboard turn to ash and the cavity be filled
with the ash? I remember making candles by pouring the hot wax over ice
cubes in a container or mold. When the ice melted you were left with a sort
of lacy effect with the wax.

You are really stirring my interest in working with clay, and I really do
not have the time. Right now I need to stay focused on the first lace shawl
that I am working on and an octopus that is on my needles and almost
finished, and then I am going to start on a few dropped stitch scarves to
donate. I've not made one before, but it sounds like an easy knit project
that will allow me to complete many in a short amount of time. I had also
planned on knitting a swimsuit cover-up but that will now just have to wait
until next winter.

Annette

haha - you put the tissue paper on the clay first, so it is a release and
the clay won't stick. I had to hit the scoop on the side of something a few
times to get it to pop out but it works just fine.
