Hi Denise,
Your increases are being done in that row by using the yfwd. Yfwd is yarn
forward/yarn over, meaning, after you have k2-tog, your working yarn is in
the back of your piece, for the yfwd, you would bring that working yarn up
and over your right-hand needle so that it lays in the front of your piece,
then go under your right-hand needle so the working yarn is now in the back
of your piece. You have just successfully done a yarn over/increasing a
stitch, in the proper position to do another k2-tog. You are basically
decreasing with the k2-tog and then increasing with the yfwd. This will not
change the number of stitches in your row.
Yfwd, means you have increased 1 stitch on your needle. Sl 1 is slip 1
stitch, meaning slip the next stitch from your left needle to your right
needle without working it, then knit the next stitch. Psso is pass slip
stitch over, meaning on your right needle you have the knit stitch and then
the slipped stitch, you want to bring that slipped stitch over the knit
stitch and off the right-hand needle so that only the knit stitch remains.
You can do this by taking your left needle and lifting the slipped stitch up
and over or sliding both the knit stitch and the slipped stitch back onto
the left needle, take your right needle and sliding it into the slipped
stitch as though you were going to perl and pull the knit stitch through the
slipped stitch and onto the right needle which will also slide the slipped
stitch off the left needle, leaving only the knit stitch on your right
needle. This combination has just increased and then decreased 1 stitch
like the k2-tog and yfwd.
This entire row is making an ilet pattern, a lacy look to your piece. Your
next row would allow you to use the yfwd as a regular stitch as you made
your way across the second row. What does the second row look like?
