[Nfb-krafters-korner] Cancer

I too am a breast cancer survivor. It has been 20 years for me. I was 34 and
I too encourage everyone to get a mammogram. Luckily my doctor wanted me to
have a baseline done at 34 since my mother's sister died in the 70's from
breast cancer. I had young children at the time so went with the mastectomy
to have the best chance at no reoccurrence. It worked, I am now in the same
risk pool as the rest of the population, which isn't all that wonderful, but
I'll take it. I pray that my daughter's much healthier life style is a
factor because both of her grandmothers and I are all breast cancer
survivors. I also pray for the researchers looking for cures.

I have a male friend who is a cancer serviver, three times. I work for the
cancer institute of the National Institute of Health. Cancer and quiting
smoking are always at ears length. I am blessed that when I had a chance to
start smoking, I turned it down. I also can not drink because of
medication.
God bless all of you who have survived.

I so agree with you. I am a 23 year survivor of bc, 23 years this month.
Yes, it was detected in a mamogram, just during a normal yearly check up. I
was 45 years old then.
I loved reading your story and memories of an artist/mother. What a
wonderful beginning you had in life to be surrounded by creativity.

I saw her one time for a couple days when I was 9, when she came home for
Christmas vacation.

No, she is no longer living she died 21 years ago last month, from breast
cancer at the age of 47. Interestingly, she and I were both diagnosed at
the same age with breast cancer yet they say it is not inherited? Somehow I
don't believe that fact. The difference? She ignored her lump, and I faced
it head on. I was diagnosed 4 years ago tomorrow. My advice to all of you
women... Mammogram, mammogram, mammogram... oh and did I say, mammogram?

Thanks, Dixie. Beautiful story of a creative spirit. Did you ever see her
again after she left the family? Is she still living?

My mother was an artist. She painted everything, and I mean everything.
The walls of the house, inside and out. The Volkswagen bus out in the
driveway, my lunchbox, my sister's high chair, and a whole lot of other
furniture, everything was painted. She for the most part painted in
flower child motifs, everything was a mass of doodles, flowers, and
psycadelic colors. She also painted serious pieces. I have a piece she did
on my wall. She would use old barn boards and paint birds on them. The
rough texture of the boards would accentuate the texture of the bird's
feathers. The one I have on my wall is about 2 feet high by 6 feet long.
It is of a section of a tree trunk with a long branch and a bunch of
Chickadees gathered on that branch. I also have a pen and ink she did for
my grandfather's birthday. It is a collage of different candles, if I am
not mistaken, there was one candle for each year. They were all different
shapes and kinds of candles she had found in different styles of decorative
holders around our house and my grandparent's house. In fact one of the
candles in the piece we had made together. It was one where you would fill
a half gallon milk carton with ice cubes and then pour the hot wax over the
ice. The candle would then harden and the ice cubes would melt away leaving
a lacy look to the candle.

she also was a potter. The first thing I remember making was on her wheel.
It is a little bowl I still have. I was either 5 or 6 years old at the time.
She also made incredible god's eyes. They were everywhere in our house. I
am sure she had us making them also. The gods eyes she made were made of
all kinds of different textures and fibers. Some the size of the entire
wall. She would paint the dowels the god's eyes were made on.

My mother moved away when I was 7 and I went to live with my grandmother.

It was my grandmother who taught me to knit when I was about 8 years old.
My aunt taught me how to crochet when I was around 8 years old also, and
she taught me macramé when I was about 10.

So, as you can see, I have been crafting my entire life. It has always been
one of my favorite forms of expression.
