Joyce.  A 5 inch charm  is a 4 1/2 inch finished square.  So, you would 
divide the 4 1/2 inches by two which is 2 1/4 and then add 1/2 inches for 
seam allowance.  So would need a strip that is cut 2 3/4 inches wide. 
Personally   , i generally use just 5 inch charms and go for a scrappy look 
instead of trying to add them to something else.  I can easily put sashing 
between them if I want to have a different look.  But,  If you want to piece 
them with other sized squares or different blocks, you can sew 4 of them 
together for a 4 patch that measures 9 1/2 inches square unfinished.  .  . 
To that, you could add a 9 1/2 inch unfinished square or a 9 patch of 3  1/2 
inch unfinished squares.   5 inch square charms can be fun because there are 
a plentitude of patterns out there for aprons to tablecloths.   JoAn
