She did not say how she wanted to cut.  If she is interested in  quilting 
the edges need to be precise and the grain of the fabric needs to be  
straight.

I do  not quilt, but you could buy a pack of plastic camvas 4 inch squares. 
  Since they have holes, you should be able to pin one to the fabric, and 
cut  around the edge.  They are cheap, if you snag one.
