How to Pick up Stitches:

You will only need your right hand needle for this.

Now, since you're doing Log Cabin, I know that you'll already have one
lonely little stitch on this needle. That's good.

Hold your work so that the right hand needle with one stitch on it is
on the right.with the edge of your knitted piece going horizontal.

Make sure the working yarn is in back

Poke the tip of your right hand needle through your work from front to
back, just to the left of where the one stitch you've already got
connects to the piece. You'll want more than just one strand of yarn
between your needle and the edge. I would recommend putting your
needle in two strands below the edge.

Wrap your working yarn around the needle as if to knit.

Pull this new stitch through the work to the front.

Congratulations! You have now picked up one stitch.

You should now have two stitches on your right hand needle.

Now, poke the tip of your right hand needle into your work again, from
front to back, this time in a spot a little to the left of where you
picked up the previous stitch.

Wrap your yarn around the right hand needle as if to knit.

Pull the new stitch through to the front of your work.

You now have 3 stitches total, 2 picked up, 1 from before.

Keep picking up stitches in this way until you have the number your
pattern indicates. Each time you pick up a stitch, you will be moving
to a new spot slightly to the left of the last one.

The goal when picking up stitches is to pick up the right number
evenly across the entire edge of your work. This may seem hard at
first, but with practice you'll think it's easy. If you come to the
end of your edge and find out you have two many stitches, or not
enough, don't be afraid to pull out the ones you've picked up and try
again. Just remember to keep that first lonely stitch from before on
your right hand needle no matter what.

I hope this helps you. Please let me know if you need more
clarification or help with anything else. Good luck on your project
