That is exactly what I do also.  Makes the knitting and crochet smoother to the touch. Or another way to put it a more uniform garment, if you join at the beginning of a row.  Now I have not tried the Russian join, so I have no opinion about that technique.I got pretty good with the for the last and beginning two or three inches    of the yarn wanting to be joined, you cut one of the threads on one side and two threads on the other side and twist together.  Now with practice, you can get a pretty smooth join, but no garentees if the garment is to roughly washed. 

The only thing that  concerns me about the Russian join is say you have a three ply yarn. So you take the thread up the middle of the yarn, so now thre plus three equals six and that is way to fat and will make a lump in the garment, but again I have not tried this technique. 

I just made a shawl with tfive  peaks. I broke the yarn off at the end of the row. I saved this yarn and made fringe.

The best way I learned is at the beginning of a row, then you don't have a color change right in the middle of your work.
