Hi Lovette,

When you have finished your chain, turn the work so that the front of the
chain (the part with the two loops on it) is facing you. your hook is on the
right side of the work with the hook itself at the back of the chain. The
work spreads from right to left in front of you with the end with the tail
at the end on the left. You have your last chain still on your hook.
Now feel the first stitch by locating the first two loops and the space
just behind them. skip that stitch and find the next stitch to its left, and
place your hook in the space between the two loops in the front and the back
of the chain. Two loops on hook now. Bring the working yarn around from
behind so it swings around in front of the hook to lay from left to right
heading back toward the ball. now there are three loops on hook. Take the
first loop (the actual two loops from your chain) over the yarn just laid
over the hook, (I previously described this process as back out of the loop
closest to the hook.) it means the same thing. Now there are two loops on
the hook. wind yarn around behind hook and lay it from left to right on the
hook between the hook and the two loops already on the hook. this time take
the two loops on the hook off over the yarn you have just laid on the hook,
or back out and pull the working yarn through both loops. ) same thing.) Now
one loop on hook. stitch completed.

When you have completed that first row of SC, chain one, (this is what you
must do before turning to begin another row of SC. Turn your work so that it
is again facing with the hook on the right and the piece spread out to the
left of the hook. you should feel two loops with a space behind them running
the length of your piece. Count these to be certain you have nineteen
stitches. Crochet into the first loop after the hook this time, because that
turning chain is considered your first stitch.

This is the process. Try it again.

As for your hands hurting, I suspect you may be gripping your work tightly
because you are tense and trying so hard, so try to relax.

Cathy
