I will continue that one more step.  I tend to pull up a loop and then  
take the crochet hook and push it like taking a large stitch with the  hook.  
That way the loop is held by the hook into your work.  So if  the working 
yarn gets tugged on it shouldn't pull out, unless the dog takes off  with it.
