Joann,

Thanks.  I was thinking that you might determine your lengths by adding 6 or
more inches to the width of your work on your needles.  Didn't know if you
had found that leaving a certain amount sticking out of each end worked
better than another length.

Annette, i had my brother cut me lengths that are 6, 12 and 18 inches long. 
If I want something smaller, would just trim those down to what I want.  My
hoodies I am knitting require a larger size so had him cut one 24 inches
long for that.  These are easily stored in your knitting basket by coiling
them and placing them in  zip lock bags.  If you want to identify the
length, Braille the dimensions on an index card and slip it into the baggie.
You will be able to read the Braille through the plastic.  JoAn-----
