There is a couple of ways of using them and there is a couple different
types of shawl pins available.

You can use any type of pin basic shawl pin and using a triangle shawl have
the point [longest point of shawl] draped over one shoulder with point
dangling to the hand. Now the other 2 points of the shawl criscross over the
other sholder with one point going to your back and the other pointing to
the front of you. Secure the pin on your shoulder thru the both layers of
the shawl or thru the both layers of the shawl and your clothing that you
are wearing under the shawl. That will hold the shawl in place, show off the
pin and hold everything from slipping.

Now they have a shawl pin that has kinda a knitting needle point coming out
of one end. It usually has something decrorative on one end and the point
or point that has a cap or something to secure on the other end. With
this one you have some other options. You can use it like the other but you
need to put it thru the weave of the Shawl. You can wear the shawl with
longest point going down your back and pinsh and work point thru both ends
holding shawl together down the front of you and arrange shawl going down
center front with shawl pin going up and down.

Those are the 2 basic ways I know of and there are a bunch of shapes of
shawls with a range of using the shawl pins.
