I'm making it as a lap blanket for my niece or for my daycare kids to use
with their nap mats, so if that isn't enough I'll make smaller panels to
make it longer.

Do you have a 41-peg loom? That should make you a blanket eighteen inches
wide or so if you were to use all pegs. that is the largest round loom. 
You could make panels of whatever width you choose and sew them together.
