Yarn weights go from CATEGORY 1 SUPER FINE: SOCK, FINGERING, BABY YARN the
lightest weight through super bulky weight, category 6 the thickest yarn. At
the store yarns say on the package the brand, the name of the particular
line of yarn in that brand, the weight (such as sport weight or worsted
medium weight) the total yardage in the ball/skein, (both in inches and
metric measurements), and the weight of the skein in ounces and metric.

So if you were looking for a sport weight yarn for example, you would first
choose a brand then check the label to see which category is listed (1 is
sock weight, 2 is sport weight, 3 is DK light worsted, 4 medium/worsted
weight, 5 bulky, 6 super bulky. 

since worsted weight is the most popular weight you are certain to find tons
to choose from.

Here is a sample label from an actual lion brand yarn:
Babysoft® Yarn
