Hi all,

I am just so pleased at how well my beginner crocheters are all progressing.
Every one is making progress at their own pace and that is wonderful. most
folks are beginning projects. I just heard from Henry this morning asking
for a review of the stitches that we covered in class as well as
descriptions of additional stitches for the scarf he will be making.

So I thought I'd post the instructions for all the basic crochet stitches so
you will all have them and you can save these and use them when you are
ready for them. as you will see, they are all variations on the single
crochet that you are now all familiar with. So enjoy.

Single crochet

You should be crocheting across the row from right to left. Let's say you
are beginning a project and you have just chained the number of chains you
will need. You skip the first chain beside your hook, and go into the second
chain to the left. this is equal to your chain 1 at the beginning of a row.
You go through the chain with the two loops on top of the hook and the one
loop on the bottom. Once your hook is through the chain, you yarn over,
bringing the yarn around the hook, coming toward you so that the yarn is
wrapped around the hook, and is behind your hook going away from you back to
the ball. Then you draw the hook through the chain, and bring the loop from
your yarn over through the chain. This leaves two loops on your hook. One of
them is the original loop from the chain, and the other one is from the yarn
over. Then you yarn over again, and take the two loops off over the yarn
over loop, leaving one loop on your hook. This makes your stitch. You do
this all the way across the chain, then chain one and turn your work. You
are again going from right to left across and going into each stitch with
two loops on top. You make the stitches the very same way by yarning over,
and drawing the loop through the stitch, then yarning over again and drawing
that loop through the other two on the hook. That is single crochet.

How to Make a Half Double Crochet Stitch

This stitch is just a bit taller than the single crochet stitch.

Chain one to turn.

Yarn over hook, two loops on hook.

Insert hook in the next stitch to be worked, three loops on hook.

Yarn over hook, four loops on hook .

Pull yarn through stitch, or loop closest to hook end of hook, three loops
on hook.

Yarn over hook, four loops on hook.

Pull yarn through all 3 loops on hook, one loop left on hook.

 (one half double crochet made).

How to Make a Double Crochet Stitch

Chain two to turn. This stitch is twice as tall as the single crochet
stitch.

With your hook in the chain loop, Yarn over hook, two loops on hook.

Insert hook in the next stitch to be worked three loops on hook.

Yarn over hook, now four loops on hook.

Pull yarn through stitch, the closest loop to the hook end of the hook, now
three loops on hook.

Yarn over hook, four loops on hook again.

Pull yarn through 2 loops on hook, the two loops closest to the hook end of
the hook, two loops now on hook.

Yarn over hook, now three loops on hook.

Pull yarn through last 2 loops on hook, one loop left on hook.

one double crochet made.

How to Triple crochet

Chain two to turn to begin row. this stitch is taller than the double
crochet.

Yarn over hook twice, three loops on hook.

then insert hook into next stitch, four loops on hook.

Yarn over hook once again, now five loops on hook.

draw yarn through the stitch or closest loop to the hook end of the hook.
now four loops on the hook again.

yarn over hook, five loops now on hook.

draw through two loops, the two loops closest to the hook end of the hook,
now three loops on the hook.

yarn over hook, now four loops on hook.

draw through the two loops closest to the hook end of the hook. two loops
on hook.

yarn over hook, now three loops on hook.

finally, draw through the last two loops on the hook, There is now one loop
remaining.)

This completes one treble crochet.
