By Brenda Myers, April 2010

SKILL LEVEL: Intermediate SIZE: 2.5 inches MATERIALS

. Yarn: scraps of worsted weight yarn: dark purple (B), yellow (C),
green (D), and assorted solids colors (A)

. Loom: Knifty Knitter Spool Loom

 . Loom hook

. Crochet hook (for securing yarn tails)

 . Yarn needle

PATTERN NOTES

. Instructions are for one strand of yarn.

. Pansies have five petals: two large back petals and three front "face"
petals with the middle face petal being a bit fuller and heart shaped. The
back petals are a solid color, while the face petals are usually the same
color as the back petals with the dark "face" markings. Petals in this
pattern are knitted separately and stitched together.

. Stitches used: Knit stitch* and e-wrap knit stitch. *Knit stitch in
this pattern refers to either flat or uwrapped knit stitch - NOT an e-wrap
knit stitch.

. For drawstring cast on instructions refer to Loom Lore Blog under

INSTRUCTIONS

Lower front side face petals (make 2)

CO: Using the 5-peg Knifty Knitter Spool Loom and one strand of B, cast on
using the drawstring cast on method.

Rnd 1: K with B on pegs-1 -5 in a counterclockwise direction.

Rnd 2: Cont with B and K pegs-1-4. Join color A with B by tying a square
knot against peg 4. (Note: When you knit the next stitch, the knot should be
between pegs-4 & 5.) K peg-5 with A. Trim the yarn tails on the square knot
closely.

Rnd 3: Cont with A and K pegs-1-5.

Row 4: Now moving in a clockwise direction, K back from peg-5 to peg-1.
Cinch the drawstring CO at the end of this row.

BO: Using an EW st, work a basic flat panel BO as follows: EW pegs-1 & 2;
lift the lp from peg-2, place it on peg 1; KO the bottom lp over the top lp;
move the new st from peg-1 back to peg-2. BO each of the remaining pegs by
EW the next peg, moving it back to the previous peg, KO and return the new
st to the current peg. After binding off the last st, cut the WY leaving a 3
inch yarn tail and pull it through the last st.

Finishing petal: Remove the petal from the loom and shape the petal with
your fingers. Using a crochet hook, pull the drawstring yarn tail from the
front of the petal through the center CO closure to the back. Turn the petal
over and hook the BO yarn tail from the upper left corner of the petal
through the stitches along the left side, ending near the base of the petal.
Tie the beginning and ending yarn tails in a very tight square knot and trim
closely.

Lower front center face petal (make 1)

This petal is made exactly like the two side petals with the following
exceptions:

. Row 4: Use the EW st instead of the K st. (Note: For best results, EW
& knit the pegs one at a time.)

. Finishing the petal: After completing all the above steps, cut a 4
inch length of A and hold in under the back of the petal. With the petal
turned right side up, insert the crochet hook just above the dark face row
in the middle of the petal and hook one end of the strand of yarn to the
front of the petal. Tie the ends of the strand near the top back of the
petal to form the heart shape and trim closely.

Larger top petals (make 2)

These petals are made like the lower front side petals with the following
exceptions:

. Use color A throughout on the 8 peg end of the KK Spool loom.

. Use the EW st instead of the K st on rows 3 & 4. (Note: For best
results, EW & knit the pegs one at a time.)

Assembling Petals

Thread a yarn needle with C and join the petals as follows:

A. With the right sides up, join the two large top petals by turning one
slightly to the left, the other slightly to the right and overlapping just a
little toward the bottom. Push the yarn needle up from the underside to the
top and back to the underside as indicated by the yellow dots below. Tie a
square knot on the back of the petal to secure the yellow yarn. Do NOT trim
the beginning yarn tail.

B. Position the left lower front side petal and stitch as shown.

C. Position the right lower front side petal and stitch as shown.

D. Position the lower front side petal and stitch as shown.

E. End by bringing the yarn to the front, work a small knot in the center
and push the needle to the back. Cut WY and secure by tying a tight square
knot with the beginning yarn tail. Trim yarn tails closely.

Leaf

CO: Using the 8-peg Knifty Knitter Spool Loom and one strand of D, leave an
eight inch beginning yarn tail and cast on using the drawstring cast on
method.

Rnds: 1-3: K all 8 pegs in a counterclockwise direction.

Row 4: Moving in a clockwise direction, KO 4x on peg8; BO end peg by K
peg-7, lift st from peg-7 & place on peg-8; K bottom lp over top lp & return
st to peg-7; K pegs-6-1.

Row 5: Moving counterclockwise, KO 4x on peg-1; BO end peg by K peg-2, lift
st from peg-2 & place on peg1; K bottom lp over top lp & return st to
peg-2; K pegs3-7. Cinch the drawstring CO at the end of this row, but do
NOT trim the yarn tail.

Remaining rows: Moving back & forth, KO 3x on end peg then BO end peg; K to
end of row. Cont this procedure until 2 pegs are left (pegs-4 & 5); work an
I- cord st on these two pegs; wrap and K one of the pegs one more time, lift
and place on the other peg; K bottom lp over top lp; cut the WY leaving a 3
inch yarn tail and pull through the last lp.

Finishing the leaf: Remove the leaf from the loom and shape the leaf with
your fingers. Turn the petal over and hook the BO yarn tail from the upper
top of the leaf through the stitches along a couple of edge st and then work
the yarn tail into the back st of the leaf, Tie off and trim. Using a
crochet hook, pull the drawstring yarn tail from the front of the leaf
through the center CO closure to the back and work a 4 inch chain to form
the stem. Tie off and trim yarn tail & trim closely.
