[Nfb-krafters-korner] Rocking-Knit chair knits hats as it rocks

Today in an e-zine called Gizmag, I found an article on a rocking chair that knits winter hats from yarn, a device invented by two students in Switzerland. The article on this interesting product has a video at the bottom has no words; it plays music as we watch a man rock the chair and see from various angles that the red winter hat overhead keeps getting longer and nearer to his head. From the top it is obvious that this is a mechanical nifty knitter machine. The device is wrapping the pegs one at a time as the circle moves each time the man rocks. The hat has an all-around brim of, I guess two inches and then the stovepipe design of the rest of the hat. I cannot tell whether the hat tapers to end it or does a stovepipe all the way up and then closes with a flat top. The photo of the all-wooden device shows what looks to me like a one-person porch swing with rockers at the bottom and wooden (square) poles rising from the four corners tapering to the top flat portion. At the top middle, parallel with the ground, is the ring of a Nifty Knitter and some gears in pairs. Two gears are horizontal and two appear to be vertical. As the man rocks, the teeth of the gears move bump, bump, bump, a stitch at a time. It is simple looking as a mechanism, from what the photo and video show, but I think not all of it is seen. A large cone of red wool thread is fitted to a spindle behind the rocker with the thread rising up to the knitter. Here is the link to the article:

If the idea of knitting your own hat has always appealed in theory, but you don't know your double pointed needles from your garter stitch, then you may wish to take a look at the Rocking-Knit chair.
