I am not trying to stir up trouble, but I have done this method many times and I use the working yarn. I do not cut a seperat piece of yarn and it works fine. As they say, to each, his own. This prevents loosing your tail from the original work and having to tie another knot.
When Cathy tought the class, I did not realize she wanted us to cut a seperat piece of yarn, since I had done it this way, before.

Hi LM,
Cathy here.

This is called the basic graft cast off and is what I taught for making the baby loomed footsies.

I will paste the instructions in below. But basically what you do is to cut your yarn leaving a 1-2 foot tail. You thread on your tapestry needle and sew up through the pegs as we did with the coaster. However in this bind off, instead of sewing up through each peg, then taking all loops off at once, you take the loop off the peg immediately after pulling the working yarn through. Of course the order in which you sew through and remove the loops is important too. So you sew through a loop, take it off, then You pull the yarn snug in the center of the loom without it being pulled so tightly that the yarn will gather. What you want is to feel a straight line forming with your stitches in the center of the loom. follow the sewing through of the loops as described below. Hope this helps and if you have further questions, let me know.

The basic graft cast off is used to close the bottom of circular knit items.
It is useful for items like purses and the toe of socks. This cast off is done with a tapestry needle. It is helpful to think of the loom as having two halves or sides. To begin, cut the working yarn, leaving a 1 - 2 foot tail.
Thread the yarn tail(s) through the eye of a tapestry needle.
Start with the peg nearest the working yarn. Sew up through the stitch on the peg as if to purl.
After the yarn has been pulled up through the stitch, remove the stitch from the peg.

Move across to the right side of the loom and sew up through the first stitch on this side as if to purl. Remove the stitch from the loom.

Move across again to the left side of the loom and sew up through the next stitch as if to purl. Remove this stitch from the loom.

Move across to the right side of the loom and sew up through the next stitch as if to purl. Remove this stitch from the loom. Continue working back and forth, from one side of the loom to the other. Gently pull as much slack as possible from between stitches as you work.

remaining slack out of the cast off by gently pulling the yarn tails, being careful not to gather the edge. Push the tapestry needle inside the knitted item.
Turn the item inside out and knot ends if desired. weave the yarn tails in.
Clip any excess yarn.

Turn the item right side out again.
