Portia,

Let's say you want to make a big pom pom. I use my iPhone or a deck of
cards or something about 3 inches wide. Take yarn and wrap it over and
over and over and over until you have a nice thickly wrapped deck of
cards or phone. You probably want something that is about 3 inches
thick. I like to make big pom poms for baby hats. When you wrap, wrap
a little loosely because now you take scissors and cut down one side
of the wrapped yarn. Carefully open the yarn and lay it flat in a nice
pile. Cut a piece of yarn that yiu will use to tie the entire pile of
yarn together. I usually take the single piece of cut yarn and tightly
wrap the pile of yarn in the middle and then knot it. I also make the
single cut piece of yarn very long like perhaps a foot long. Now
holding on to the single piece of cut yarn, hold the whole thing
upside down and trim your pom pom to the length you want.

I just bought a pom pom cutter from Jo-Ann's to see if it makes the
process easier. I'll let you know if it works.

Hope my directions help.
