Diane,
 
Check these patterns right at the beginning as they usually give  
abbreviations  or discription of stitches used.  So if you understand  the 
description of the stitch go for it.  Let's face it knitting is just  knit and purl 
stitches beside cast on and bind off.  So if you can knit and  purl 
comfortably, then try taking on one of those challenges.
