Joining blocks I like to crochet them.  You can use a single crochet  or a 
slip stitch to make it flatter.  You need to steam with an iron and  that 
will flatten them even more.  The biggest tip is example you used a  worstered 
weight yarn to create the blocks use a sport or sock yarn to crochet  them 
together.  If you use a bulky weight yarn split the yarn in half to  crochet 
them together.
