wonderful suggestion about using a laundry basket  to place the skein in when hand winding from the outside. yes, the skeins do jump about a lot, and a laundry basket would give the skein a nice play area without fear of dog hair. <smile.)
glad you mentioned rolling the balls somewhat loosely, I learned that years ago and it is an important thing to remember for the reasons you mentioned.
