Not quite; the idea is kind of similar, but those would probably be too small. You want a minimum of embroidery or DMCcomthicks thread, and from what I remember, sewing machine bobbins are a bit small to handle that. If you don't want to buy the bobbins, you can make them out of any sturdy material that you can wind thread onto. I've used everything from those cards they sell embroidery thread on to craft-foam squares of about the same size with slits cut in them, to give you some examples.
