[Nfb-krafters-korner] neighbor recycler?

Hi Terry K,
I searched for it again, and came up with this website.
http://matsforuganda.wordpress.com/about/

I believe the original mention I saw was on a forum and wasn't very
detailed. After reading this info, I was moved to tears. We really are
just so fortunate in the USA. I hope this info is what you were looking
for.

Jill,
Can you give me any info about the lady who makes the mats from bags for
Africa, this sounds interesting and would like to get more info. Thanks.
Terry K

Lol! Those plastic bags are great for dogs, just make sure there isn't a
hole in the bag first! I use them also for that purpose, and as trash can
liners for my bathroom trash cans. Oh yes and of course for my Olivia's
diapers. I still seem to have a surplus and just was bored one day and
googled crafts to make with plastic bags... thus a wide array of plarn
projects. Thanks for the info about your friend's monument. I thought it
sounded interesting as you described the rings. I wonder if it sparkles
when sunlight strikes it?

Jill
Alice recycles everything. She has incorporated venetian blind cord
but I haven't heard her talk about incorporating any plastic bags or other
similar materials into her work. I'll ask her if she knows of anyone who
does, or has seen any of what you speak of, probably in a magazine. Thing is
that Alice used to also be a tailor so what she has a house full of is cloth
of all types as well as yarn. I hear she has a gorgeous sunny living room
but you'd never know cause it's all full of cloth. I have not been invited
into that room but I was invited for the first time today into a room full
of other cloth and a few looms.
I have a friend who teaches sculpture up at UVM in Burlington
Vermont. Just before January when a plastic water bottle ban went into
effect on campus, she erected a huge arch supported by 2 columns all made
out of identically sized plastic water bottles, some kind of old bicycle
tubing, and I think that was about it. The Face Book page was called
something like Colossal Monument to Waste. She wasn't even sure it would
stand the day of the opening but it did, it was a huge success, and
beautiful to look at from under it given you were looking up at circle
within circle of a sort. Now town or city hall wants her to erect something
of the same nature or recreate this one in a huge fancy government building,
so now she has to make a third column to support it since the last one was
not entirely free standing but for security's sake, was held up by a gyre
wire overhead.
My friend Beth in general also works with cloth and all kinds of
reusable materials, and for rug hooking, I might not be using recycled waste
products, but I know of others that do. I think I felt some of that plastic
yarn at a shop the other day. It's stiff., As for me, my main use of old
plastic bags other than grocery bags are for picking up a different kind of
waste, if you know what I mean!

Has your neighbor ever knitted or crocheted with plastic yarn? I was
reading online about people who use plastic shopping bags and make it into
what they call plarn. I thought it was a neat idea. There was one person
who made plastic mats for a missionary in some place in Africa for people to
lie on instead of the earth. Was just curious since she is so talented and
into recycling.

	Thanks for the pattern info.
My neighbor Alice Kane does indeed want to pass along her talent
and love of the work. Her rugs belong in museums as much as on a floor, more
so perhaps on a wall. I'm partial to things that can be used however, and to
some extent she makes what she walks on and wears as well.
This woman is also very frugal and a master recycler. The Chaneile
she had cones of and she wanted to use it! She has also set a goal for
herself of having 100 rugs in stock. Presently, I believe she has 355 or so,
maybe more.

Hi Diedra,
Yes, I will look up the pattern and send it to you all - see attachment. It
is just a lovely fabric.
It is a really lovely piece when it is knitted the fabric is so textured and
sophisticated. Everyone who sees it wants to touch it.

Your neighbor probably appreciates your interest in the fiber world she
loves so much. You have a teacher right there so be sure to learn from her,
all you can. That is her legacy to the world, to pass along her wisdom.
Lucky you!

Lynda
