Davey Hulcher had advised an index card that measures 6 by 4 inches to  
carry in your knitting bag.  It is a great tool and can be folded in half  to 
get measurements of 2 inches and 3 inches beside the 4 and 6 inches and you  
can also guesstimate some in between...

listed:  Don't have a ruler, use a dollar  bill.  It is 6.1 inches long and 
will be great for approximate  measuring.
