The directions are very confusing. You need to knit 1-39 then cast off 39, 38, 37 and then knit 36-1
Then knit 1-36
Cast off 36, 35, 34 then knit 33-1
Hope this makes sence.
The directions, when I read it never say in their wording, to actually cast off.
By decreasing by 3, each time, we are actually casting off these 3 stitches. We are doing the opposite of what we did on the opposite side, which was to increase by 3. We have our 17 inches inbetween these 2 slanted pieces of the side.
We will sew, partially, the flat side to form the poncho.

Hi Barb,
Where are you finding this picture? Does it have any attached directions?
Yes, the instructions from last night's class were to knit 1 to 36 and back and then decrease by three every other row. By my way of thinking you can't be removing loops off pegs ending up at pegs 1-3 and still have 37-39 on the loom. Have not worked a pattern other than the Christmas stocking with increases and decreases so could be confused about this but don't think so since the knit does look like it could be one-half of a poncho. :)
You don't need to worry about this until you have 17 inches from peg 39 though and hopefully Henry or someone will clarify.
Karen
