[Nfb-krafters-korner] O.T. Braille and Print

Lindy;
I learned print in first grade and then went to learning braille.  I used print for math and maybe phone numbers, but braille is my primary.  I used to be able to read the headlines on the newspaper, but I am sure it would be a struggle and it depends on the clerity and the background.  
About the only things I look at are a few clothing magizines and colors of yarn, even though I have trouble with the yarn, some times.

I can also help with most braille questions.  I just found myself correcting a friends braille error, not to be mean, but so the person would improve!
I read better than I spell.  

Having a sight problem, it is a mistory, how a sighted person can see a whole word at a time, when I have to scan large letters, to identify each letter.  
I had a blood clot, as a baby and it defected both optic nerves.  As a teanager I ended up with epelepsi.  Later my hearing started going down hill and I have obtained multiple orthapetic problems, that are most likely related.  
I may be in pain and have to use a walker at convention, to get around, but I am still trucking!

Hi Jill, I also had some sight up until the age of 20, after which my sight deteriorated rapidly. Even though I could see enough to read typed print if I held it close to my face, it was decided that I would be placed in the class for those who would use braille as their primary reading and writing medium. I actually used both braille and print over the years. I was allowed to use whatever medium I found best for a specific task, which, looking back, showed some insight on the part of my teachers. For instance, I could take out both braille and large print books from our library, or I could use pen and paper to do tests that only required short answers, like with a multiple question test, where you just write one number or letter per answer. I also sometimes used print to do my maths, but I loved braille for taking notes since it was much faster than I could write with a pen. I think that, because I learnt braille from the age of 7, I was able to make it my primary medium, without losing the ability to also make use of print. 
Actually, it was my mom who taught me print letters even before the age of 7, something I have always been grateful for since those that were doing braille as their primary medium wasn't taught print writing and letters, except for the very basics.
