Thank you so very much!  I am so glad to hear a first hand account of this
project.  I may give it a try since spring is here and summer around the
corner.  My little girl would probably enjoy it.  I thought it would be good
for potty training also since it is loose and long.  Thanks you so much!

The pillow case dress is a popular and relatively easy sewing project I have

seen described in many places around the net. I am sure you will find some 
good descriptions if you google it, but the link below from ehow.com gives a

fairly good step-by-step description of the process.
These dresses are usually made for little girls or as tops for older girls. 
They are quite loose fitting, hanging straight down, but, as this article 
describes, you can use the top, closed part that you have to cut off the 
pillow case as a belt or sash.
BTW, I have actually made myself a top from a large square pillow case. We 
call them continental pillow cases over here in SA.
They are large, square pillow cases. Unlike the project described below, the

top I made is sort of like a tank top. I had someone help me to cut slight 
curves for the neck and armholes. I actually wear my pillowcase top 
regularly!
Anyway, you will use the existing hem as the bottom hem of your project.
Basically, you will make two cuts. The first is to cut straight across the 
top of the pillow case to form an open tube.
Then, fold the pillow case lengthways and cut out a shape that resembles the

letter j, to form the armholes of the dress. As the article describes, you 
then fold over the straight top part of the pillowcase down twice to form a 
casing and zigzag or hem the armholes. Lastly, you use a ribbon to thread 
through the front and back casings and tie the ribbon at the shoulders.
The article provides some basic measurements for making the cuts and you can

also measure the actual pillow case against the person you are making it for

if it is possible.
I have made the two cuts on my own by using straight pins and a ruler. If 
you don't feel up to it, it is fairly easy for most people to cut in a 
straight line across and then to cut out a J shape. It can help if they see 
a picture from the Internet or you can give them the measurements and a 
light line can be drawn in the form of the letter j so they can follow it to

make the cut. Because you fold the pillow case lengthways, both armholes 
will be similar as you make the j shaped cut only once.
